Quilts from the Bluffs will meet Saturday, December 12, for its monthly quilt day at First Christian Church.  We meet from 9:30-3:30 in room C4 (lower level East side).  Our December tradition is to have a pot luck lunch together so bring a dish or dessert to share.  We will have limited use of the kitchen this year so plan accordingly.  We will have extension cords available to plug crock pots into and tables set up in the hallway for food.  All paper goods and water will be supplied.  We will break around noon and eat lunch together as a group.

This will also be a work day so plan on working on quilts we have in some stage of production.  I have several that need binding and several ready to pin/quilt.  There will also be quilt kits available to work on.

Give Away Table

I am bringing several items that were donated for you to chose from.  I am also going to bring fabric to share with you to build up your personal "charity quilt" stash.  I need to share the fabric with you as it is becoming more than I can manage.  My hope is by making it available it will get used quicker.  Feel free to cut it into  useable pieces (10", 5", 2 1/2", 2 1/2" strips) or make up kits and bring  back to the group if you want.

Charmed 4 Charity

The afternoon Charmed 4 Charity group that meets at Cut Up & Quilt on the 3rd Wednesday of the month will NOT meet in December.  They will resume meeting in January.

Quilt Marathon

Plans for the 2nd Annual Quilt Marathon are well underway.  Make sure you have your calendars marked for January 22 and 23, 2016.  A flyer is attached if you would like to print it off and share with your friends.

We meet from 5:00-9:00 on Friday night and 9:00-5:00 on Saturday to make simple Charmed 4 Charity (99- 5" squares) quilts.  We will finish as many as we can in that 12-hour time period.  This means from the piecing to the binding.  Kits will be available that include everything you need to finish the quilt.  Bring your sewing machine and filled bobbins and be ready to SEW, SEW, SEW!!  Last year we completed 30 quilts so we will try to beat that record!!  Dinner Friday and Lunch Saturday will be supplied.  Bring a snack to share.

Little Bethlehem Drive Through

First Christian Church has a live nativity scene you can drive through next weekend (11th - 13th) from 7:00-9:00.  It is a great way to celebrate the season. Admission is free.  First Christian Church, 20794 Hwy 92, Council Bluffs.

Quilts from the Bluffs monthly quilt day is this Saturday, September 12.  We meet at First Christian Church on the lower level in room C4 from 9:30 - 3:30.  Bring your sewing machine and join us.

This month we are working on a couple different charm patterns (5" squares) as well as string blocks.  We will be pushing to finish up as many quilts as possible for the Fall Project Linus day (don't have a date yet but usually it is in October) so I will be bringing several quilts ready for binding and others ready to pin/quilt.

Group T-Shirts

I am collecting orders for our group T-Shirt and will place the order on September 12.  If you would like one, please send an email with the style, color and size

Short-sleeve t-shirt - $15
Long-sleeve t-shirt - $25
Sweatshirt - $25
Hoodie - $32

Robin's Challenge

Robin Wilson is holding a challenge this month for blocks to help make quilts for children in foster care.  If you would like to help, the link to her blog is below with instructions.  If you are coming to quilt day Saturday, we will have fabric for you to make a couple blocks and we will mail them for you.

2nd Annual Quilt Marathon

Save the date!  We will hold our 2nd quilt marathon January 22-23, 2016.  We meet 5:00-9:00pm on Friday and 9:00-5:00 on Saturday.  This was a great event last year and we are looking forward to another successful marathon.  This is a great event to invite friends and introduce them to our group.  More information to come.

August 2015 Quilt Day

Quilts from the Bluffs monthly quilt day will be this Saturday, August 8, from 9:30 - 3:30.  We meet at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs on the lower level, East side in room C4.  New quilters are always welcome!  Bring your sewing machine and everything else will be supplied.

From August through December, we are going to work on two different charm quilts as well as string quilts.  If you have a GO Cutter with a 5" die, bring it.  I will bring scrap that we can cut into 5" squares and you can put your own quilt kits together to match your taste.  I will have some border combinations ready for you.  If I don't have any that match your quilt, I will bring your top home and select border fabric for you and bring them back in September.  I will have white fabric and a few other solid color fabrics for the Simple Charm.

This is called Baby Charm and is a easy way to make a quilt on point.  You will want to try this method.

This quilt is called Simple Charm.  Pattern attached.

We will also have fabric and foundations available to work on string blocks.  We would like to be intentional on selecting coordinating colors or perhaps an entire quilt with the same color family.  We will be using 10" foundation squares that will square up to 9 3/4".
We will also finish up our Sweet and Simple quilts we have been working on for a couple months.

Quilt Retreat
If you have not paid your retreat balance yet, it is due no later than Saturday.  If you will not be at quilt day, please mail your check to me at 3118 Gold Rush Rd, CB, IA  51501.

2nd Annual Quilt Marathon
I have requested a room at the church for our 2nd Annual Quilt Marathon.  SAVE THE DATE...January 22 (5:00-9:00) - January 23 (9:00-5:00).

Charmed for Charity
Our Charmed for Charity group meets each month at Cut Up & Quilt on the third Wednesday from 1:00-3:00.  We would love to have new faces there or quilt kits are available (usually) to pick up at the quilt shop if you would like to put one together.

These finished quilts (or finished tops) as well as any quilt you would like to donate can be dropped of at Cut Up & Quilt.  We will pick them up from there and get them delivered to the community.

New Quilt Recipients
As of July, we are donating quilts to Risen Son in Council Bluffs and to Nebraska Medicine Pediatric Transplant Unit.  We would not be able to expand our reach without all of your dedicated involvement.  Thank you so much for your generosity with your time and materials.

We hope to see you on Saturday!!

Quilts from the Bluffs Fundraiser 2015

Quilts from the Bluffs is a growing and thriving quilt ministry in Council Bluffs, IA serving the Omaha/Council Bluffs community.  We are a ministry of First Christian Church, Council Bluffs, IA where we meet once a month as a group.  We also have a group that meets monthly at Cut Up & Quilt quilt shop in Council Bluffs.

We began in October 2006 making 17 quilts that first three months of 2006 to over 500 so far in 2015!  We have given around 2,800 quilts to various recipients and our deliveries have grown each year and will continue to do so.

Quilts ready for labels before delivered
Current recipients of our quilts include:

Quilts from the Bluffs survives on donations of fabric, batting, thread and monetary donations to pay for other supplies such as fabric cutters, rulers, pins, cutting mats, etc.

We have a current need to purchase new labels to attach to each quilt we deliver.  The purpose of the labels is to let the recipient know that someone cares and may potentially lead them to a church if they are searching...Or at least give them a glimpse into God's love in action.

These labels are not cheap and to be able to buy them at the lowest cost possible, we need to order a large quantity.  We have complete faith that we will use these labels over the next ten years.  However, that gives us a one-time financial burden
and we are reaching out to the community we serve for help.

We are selling four quilts at $50 each to raise money for these labels.
100% of the proceeds will go towards the labels.
Checks can be made out to First Christian Church with Quilt Ministry in the notes section.
This is a tax deductible gift.

If you are interested in purchasing one of these quilts, please email

These are four separate quilts (I know, they look the same)
and each professionally longarm quilted a little differently.
They are 35" square--perfect for a baby or toddler and a great gift.
All are backed with the dinosaur flannel fabric shown below.

Quilt Day Activity July 2015

We had 19 energetic quilters come out for a hot July day of quilting.  We had four new ladies join the group.  WELCOME!!  We love meeting new friends.

Sondra is mentoring Emily on how to quilt a quilt.  Emily is one of our newer quilters but is learning fast!

Claudia gets on a roll with her machine quilting.  Love the jewel tone colors in the quilt she is working on.

Dixie is all business working with her featherweight machine.

Chloe is ready to follow in her mom's footsteps.  She was quite the helper.

July 2015 Quilt Day

I hope everyone has some fun plans to celebrate the birthday of our great country.  Be safe and have fun.

Next Saturday, July 11, we will hold our monthly quilt day at First Christian Church, Council Bluffs, from 9:30-3:30.  I hope you can join us.

We will continue making the Sweet and Simple quilt.  I have an updated pattern attached.  Thanks to everyone that helps me proof and improve the patterns to make them easier to use.  Last month we had several tops completed.  I can’t wait to see how many come in finished and new ones created.  I will work on getting some interesting combinations of fabrics in our kits for this month.

2015 Quilt Retreat - PreCuts

This year’s retreat is full.  We filled up faster than ever and I am hoping this means it will be an awesome retreat!  A Retreat Packet will be distributed next month with complete information.  Also, all fees are due no later than August 8

Quilt Deliveries

We have not made any deliveries this month but have a mountain of quilts ready to go out the door.  We are still officially at 315 delivered YTD but I’m sure I have at least 100 more at home.  We are looking for another recipient for adult quilts (hospice/end of life care) in the Council Bluffs area but have not settled on one yet.  This is great news that we have more quilts than are needed with our current organizations.  I will keep you informed when I know more.

Charmed 4 Charity

The afternoon group of Charmed 4 Charity meets at Cut Up & Quilt on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 1:00-3:00.  This group cuts 5” squares from scrap, puts kits together that include 99 squares, and also sews the tops.  We would love to have some new faces.  The evening group no longer meets.

June 2015 Quilt Day

Quilts from the Bluffs will be meeting this Saturday, June 13, from 9:30 – 3:30 at First Christian Church, Council Bluffs.  We meet in room C4 which is on the lower East side.  It is easiest to come in the door at the back on the NE side.  Watch for the signs.

This month we will begin a new quilt I call Sweet and Simple.  All patterns, fabric, batting, thread is supplied.  Bring your sewing machine and join us.

I have a few quilts ready for binding and quilts pinned and ready to quilt.

Quilt Deliveries
We have given away 315 quilts so far this year and I have an additional 97 on hand.  I am amazed at the quilts being dropped off at Cut Up & Quilt and the number of quilts we are kicking out on our Saturday quilt days and Charmed for Charity group.  I recognize that many of you are spending time on your own making this happen as well and just want to THANK YOU for your dedication and caring spirit!  Think of how many lives we are touching through your generosity.

Quilt Retreat
We still have 6 openings (at the time of this writing) for our annual quilt retreat in September, but will need to close registrations when we hit 30.  If you still want to go, please get your registration in soon.

Charmed for Charity
There will be no Charmed for Charity in June due to the Iowa Shop Hop and the Omaha Quilt Show.  We will continue to have the afternoon group on the third Wednesday of the month from 1:00-3:00.  This group meets at Cut Up & Quilt. There will no longer be an evening group.

If you have any questions about this group or would like more information, please feel free to email me or call.

Looking forward to spending Saturday with you!
