December 2014 Quilt Day

Quilts from the Bluffs will meet this Saturday, December 13, at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs from 9:30 - 3:30.  Bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies.  All fabric, patterns and even thread are supplied.

December is our traditional pot luck luncheon.  We will break at noon and sit down to a meal together.  Please bring a dish, dessert or snack to share with the group.  Come early to get a spot as December is usually highly attended!

We will be working on various quilt kits we have on hand as well as quilting quilt tops from our backlog of tops.

Scrap Vomit Quilts on the Agenda for January

The Scrap Vomit quilt (put together by I'm a Ginger Monkey) is a great way to use scrap.  I thought we would work on these in January as a group.  The quilt is made up of 49 patch blocks using scrap 2 1/2" squares.  Half the blocks have a bright color fabric and black to add a little pop to the quilt.  Start cutting your scrap and bring your 2 1/2" squares with you in January to add to our stash.  If you want to get ambitious, you can start making 49 patch blocks ahead of time.  I will also bring some scrap with me next week if anyone wants to take it home to cut.

These quilts will be twin size and will be given to Children's Square.

Quilt Marathon
The Quilt Marathon is fast approaching.  January 23 from 5:00-9:00 and January 24 from 9:00-5:00 we will be making Charmed for Charity quilts.  Our meal committee is planning yummy meals for us and all fabric will be provided.  Mark your calendars and bring your friends.  You do not need to attend the entire time.  Come when you can.  This is going to be a really fun time!!

If you would like to donate 5" squares for this event, you can drop them off at quilt day (December or January) or at Cut Up & Quilt (please mark them to go to Quilts from the Bluffs). You can also bring them to the quilt marathon.  A great way to use up those piles of scrap!!

Charmed for Charity
Our last Charmed for Charity for the year will be held on December 17 from 1:00-3:00 at Cut Up  & Quilt.

The January evening group will not meet due to the holiday.

UFO Challenge
Some of us participated in a UFO challenge this year and it was a success.  Lots of projects got done and some projects are ready to carry over to the 2015 UFO Challenge.  If you would like to participate this year, please let me know.

If you are going to do the challenge, please email me a list of the projects you plan to finish next year.  All I need is a description of the project.  I will need your list by the end of December if possible.  We have a secret group on FaceBook that you can join for  those in the challenge  so that we can encourage and share with each other throughout the year.

Quilts from the Bluffs November Quilt Day

November has arrived and looks like it has brought some cooler weather with it.  Sounds like the perfect weather to be quilting with friends.  We will be meeting this Saturday, November 8, at First Christian Church, Council Bluffs.  We meet on the lower East side of the building in room C1 from 9:30am - 3:30pm.  It is easier to park around back and enter through the East doors (look for the signs).

We will continue to work on an assortment of quilt kits and finish up as many as we can.  I will have quilts ready to pin and quilt as well.

If you are working on a quilt that needs backing, binding, batting or something else, please let me know.  I will try to find what you need and bring it with me.

Charmed for Charity

Our evening Charmed for Charity group meets this Thursday, November 6, at Cut Up & Quilt quilt shop at 6:00.  Stop by and help cut 5” squares, kit them up, or sit down and sew one up.

The next afternoon group meets on November 19 from 1:00-3:00.

Quilt Marathon 2015

Quilts from the Bluffs will sponsor our first Charmed for Charity Quilt Marathon.  We will meet on Friday, January 23 from 5:00-9:00pm and come back on Saturday from 9:00-5:00.  That’s 12 hours of quilting in two days.  How many charm quilts can we make in that time???  I can’t wait to find out.  We want to pack the room so spread the word to all your quilting friends.  We also plan on feeding you well.  Just bring your sewing machine and the rest will be supplied.

Quilt Deliveries

We have delivered 374 quilts so far this year!  That’s two more than last year and we still have two months to go.  This shows what a busy group we have been this year.  Thank you so much!!

Hope to see everyone on Saturday!

Charmed For Charity Quilt Marathon

Quilts from the Bluffs is sponsoring their first

This is going to be so exciting.  Twelve hours of quilting in one weekend.

Mark your calendars for January 23-24.  We will meet at First Christian Church, Council Bluffs, in room C1 (lower level East side.)
The marathon will start at 5:00 pm Friday night and end at 9:00 pm.  We will gather back again in the morning at 9:00 am-5:00 pm.
We will have plenty of food to keep us energized and all fabric will be provided.  We just need YOU!!
Invite your friends, family, and neighbors!
We want to pack the room with sewing machines and smiling faces.
We will be working on Charmed For Charity (C4C) quilts which go together quick and are easy to quilt.  We want to see how many FINISHED quilts we can get done.
Quilts from the Bluffs started the Charmed for Charity groups in January of this year.  They meet at Cut Up & Quilt quilt shop twice a month – an afternoon group on the third Wednesday and an evening group on the first Thursday.

A C4C quilt is made of 99 – 5” charm squares.  That’s it!  Easy peasy!

October 2014 Quilt Day

We are full-swing into Fall and, hopefully, you are full-swing into quilting.

Quilts from the Bluffs will hold its monthly quilt day this Saturday, October 11, from 9:30am - 3:30pm.  We meet at First Christian Church on Hwy 92 in the lower level East side.  If you come in the North East doors at the back of the church, you can follow the signs to our room.  Bring your sewing machine and basic supplies.  All fabric and patterns are supplied.

This month we are going to continue to use up kits I have on hand and get some of our backlog of quilt tops sandwiched, quilted, and bound.  Hope you can join  us!

This month we are celebrating our 8th anniversary as a quilt ministry.  We have grown so much since that first quilt day and I am amazed at the quilts and the friendships that we have made.  We have delivered around 2,200 quilts and currently have over 50 quilters on our active roster.  Thank you so much for your dedication to what we are doing and for all the time and resources you contribute.

Harvest of Talents
The Harvest of Talents craft fair will be held October 18.  There is still time to donate hand made items.  Please bring them to quilt day this Saturday.  Also, plan on coming to shop!  All proceeds will go to For God's Children International.

Quilt Retreat
We held our 7th annual quilt retreat last week and had a great time.  We were able to quilt in the new Chapel which gave us so much more room than we are used to.  We had beautiful weather and the only complaint may have been it was too hot.  We ran the air conditioning the whole time.

Thank you to Cindy and Barb for stopping by the camp Saturday morning to take our pictures!

Love our retreat shirts!

The new chapel.

Project Linus
The semi-annual Project Linus blanket making day is November 1 at Bryan High School in Bellevue from 9:00-1:00.  We are trying to get our kids quilts finished by then so I can deliver them that day.

Charmed for Charity Quilt Marathon
We are planning a new event in January...a Quilt Marathon!  The event will be held January 23 from 5:00-9:00 and on January 24 from 9:00 - 5:00 at First Christian Church.  The idea is to make as many Charmed for Charity quilts as we can in these two days.  For those that don't know what these are, we take 5" squares and sew them in 11 rows of 9 squares.  They are fast and easy and I think we can really get a lot of quilts made in these two days.

This is a great time to invite your friends or get youth involved with sewing and doing volunteer work for the community.  I would like to "pack the house" that weekend as well as allow people to work from home and communicate with us through our Quilt Like U Mean It! Facebook page.

We'll have more to come on this but mark your calendars now.  We have scheduled the following weekend as a snow date if the weather is bad.

I believe that covers what I needed to communicate with everyone this month.  If you have any questions about the group, please email me.   Hope to see a big crowd on Saturday.

September 2014 Quilt Day

Fall is definitely upon us.  Some love the sweatshirt weather but I could use just a bit more of the warm weather before heading into the cold.  Whatever your preference, it is out of our control so we might as well make the best of it and quilt!  Yes, that's the way I justify about everything.

Quilts from the Bluffs will meet this Saturday, September 13, from 9:30 - 3:30.  We are extending our hours a little for the fall and winter months so come a little earlier or stay a little later.  We meet at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs on the lower East side of the church.  It is easier to go in the North East doors at the back of the church and follow the signs.  Bring your sewing machine and a lunch and/or snack to share.

This month we will be finishing up quilts we have already started and working on various kits we have on hand.  We have 92 quilt tops at my house that need to be quilted and I will be bringing some of them with me.  If you would like to bring quilts home to quilt, let me know so I bring enough with me.  If you quilt them, we can get others to do the binding if you prefer.

Project Linus
The next Project Linus Blanket Making Day is November 1 from 9:00-1:00.  We have lots of quilts already on hand to bring but would like to finish as many as we can by that November 1 day so I can bring them with me.  You are welcome to come as well to help sew labels on quilts/blankets that will be donated that day or work on piecing a quilt top.  They meet at Bryan High School in Bellevue.

Charmed for Charity
Our Charmed for Charity (C4C) groups continue to meet at Cut Up & Quilt each month.  This has been a great way to meet new quilters with a heart for giving and we have produced lots of quilts through this outreach.

Afternoon group meets on the third Wednesday from 1:00-3:00.
Evening group meets on the first Thursday from 6:00-8:00.

Harvest of Talents
We are still collecting items for FCC's Harvest of Talents craft show to benefit For God's Children International ministry.  This is the organization that runs the camp we have our annual retreat. Any handmade craft items will be accepted.

Thirty-One Gifts
Christy Smith (my daughter) will be available during our quilt day to show some of the new products from the new Fall Thirty-One catalog and will have new catalogs available.  They have so many items that compliment the quilters lifestyle and they are functional as well as pretty.  I am looking forward to seeing the new All-Day Organizing Tote.  Normally $45, with a $35 purchase it is only $15.

If you can't make it to quilt day Saturday, I am having an open house Friday evening at 7:00 at my home.  I would love to have you join me then.  Let me know if you need directions.

Looking forward to spending the day with you on Saturday!

August, 2014 Quilt Day

Quilts from the Bluffs will meet this Saturday, August 9, from 10:00 – 3:00 at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs.  We meet on the lower level and it is best to enter through the North East doors at the back of the church.  Follow the signs.  Bring your sewing machine, basic supplies, and a snack and/or lunch.

We enjoyed making tumbler block quilts last month and will continue with them this month.  I would also like help in getting quilts quilted and bound.  I will have quilts with backing, batting and binding ready to be finished for those who can help with that.  Project Linus will have their blanket making day sometime time in late September or Early October so we want to begin our push to finish as many as we can by then.

Last Call for Quilt Retreat
All retreat fees are due August 9 for the September Quilt Addiction retreat.  There are also still three openings if you know anyone that would like to attend.  I need to know this week so we can begin our final planning for the retreat.

We also received word that Penni will be our cook this year!!  Yummy, yummy!!!  She spoils us wonderfully.

Charmed for Charity
We are still meeting twice a month at Cut Up & Quilt to cut 5” squares to put into kits for small quilts for Project Linus and Mercy Hospital.
  • Afternoon group meets on the third Wednesday from 1:00-3:00.
  • Evening group meets on the first Thursday from 6:00-8:00.

I am considering having a "Charmed for Charity" marathon event in January.  We would meet Friday evening and all day Saturday at the church to piece and finish as many C4C quilts as we can.  Quilter's could come for whatever time fit their schedules but I think this would be a great way to get a jump start to 2015.  I would love some feedback on this before I set it up.  Please let me know your thoughts.  I think we could make it a fun event!

Harvest of Talents Craft Fair
First Christian Church puts on a craft fair every other year to raise money for a specific ministry through the sale of handmade items.  The fair will be in October and will benefit For God’s Children International.  This is the same ministry that is associated with the camp we use for our quilt retreat.  If you have any handmade items you would like to donate for this event, you can bring them to quilt day over the next two months.

July 2014 Quilt Day

We just got back from an exciting Independence Day celebration with family in Kansas City.  I have never seen so many fireworks on one street in my life!  But everyone escaped uninjured and we had a great time.  Hope you also spent time with family and friends.

Saturday we will be gathering to work on Tumbler Block quilts at First Christian Church, Council Bluffs, from 10:00 - 3:00.  We meet on the lower level on the East side of the church.  Follow the signs from the lower North East doors.  The tumbler squares are already cut out for you so just come and sew.  They go together quickly and are lots of fun.  We will be using both 6 1/2" and 9 1/2" blocks.

If you would like more information or have questions about the group or what to bring, please email me at

I did a count of our quilts so far this year and we have delivered 144 and have 76 on hand ready to deliver.  That makes our half-way total for the year at 220!!  That is amazing.  Way to go, ladies!!!

Quilt Retreat - "Quilt Addiction"

There is one more month left to get your quilt retreat registrations in.  August 9 is the deadline.  We have five openings left.  I have attached the form.  You can mail it or bring it to quilt day with a minimum of $25 deposit.

Reminder to those who have registered but have not paid your full balance, ALL PAYMENTS are due in full by August 9.

We are starting to make plans for the fun event and we know it will be a great time!!

UFO Challenge

We are halfway through our 2014 UFO Challenge for those who have signed up.  As a group, we have completed about a third of the projects we planned on finishing this year.  I say that is a great success!

If you signed up but have not updated us on your projects complete, please email me with the name of the projects you have finished or post to our UFO Challenge FaceBook group.

See you on Saturday!!

June 2014 Quilt Day

I hope everyone has been enjoying warmer weather FINALLY.  Hard to believe that it is already June.  Next Saturday we will be getting together for our monthly quilt day at First Christian Church, Council Bluffs.  We meet from 10:00 - 3:00 in room C1 on the lower level East side of the church.  It is easier to go in the lower doors at the back of the church and follow the signs.  Bring your sewing machine and a snack/lunch.  All fabric and patterns are supplied.

We have had a lot of success working with 10" squares and we will take one more month to continue with the 10 minute block and the One Patch quilts.  I also have several quilts that need binding and several Charmed for Charity tops that need to be quilted.

Quilt Deliveries
Quilts for Mercy Hospital

We shipped five quilts to Quilts of Compassion to be given to the Tornado Relief efforts in the Southern states hit so hard.  I love watching what this group is doing and hope to support their efforts more in the future.

We also gave 26 quilts to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs.  Sue Simmons, Chaplain, passed on her appreciation for these quilts and wants you to know what a difference they are making in people's lives.

We have eight quilts ready to be delivered to Children's Square as well and a stack building for Project Linus that will be delivered in October.

Quilt Retreat - "Quilt Addiction"

The quilt retreat is filling up fast this year.  If you have not registered yet and want to go, fill out the attached registration form and bring it Saturday or mail it to me with a $25 deposit to hold your spot.  There are only 8 spots left!

Charmed for Charity

Our Charmed for Charity (C4C) groups continue to meet at Cut Up & Quilt and have been a great success.  Thank you to all who have joined us.

For June only, the afternoon group will not meet on the third Wednesday due to the Omaha Quilt Show preparation the quilt shop needs to do to get ready for their booth.

We will meet in July for both the evening and afternoon groups.

Work Day

I plan on opening my house up on the 2nd Thursday of each month for anyone who would like to help cut fabric (with the Studio fabric cutter), put kits together, sew labels on, pick out backings for quilt tops and anything else that needs to be done to prepare for quilt day.  The more prepared we can be ahead of time, the more productive everyone can be on quilt day.

The first work day will be this Thursday, June 12, from 5:30-9:00.  You don't have to come the whole time.  Please let me know if you will be coming or respond to the event on our FaceBook page so I know how many to expect.  If you need directions to my house, let me know.

Thirty-One Book Party

This month Thirty-One is offering the Large Utility Tote for $10 with the purchase of $35.  You can also get a Deluxe Utility Tote for $25 with a $35 purchase.  If you haven't already discovered how great these totes are for hauling around all our quilt stuff, you should definitely check them out.  Let me know if you would like anything by June 15.

Looking forward to a great day quilting with you Saturday.

May 2014 Quilt Day

Seventeen enthusiastic quilters donated their day to working on quilts for our community.  I just love spending time with people that are compassionate and caring and willing to sacrifice a beautiful Spring day to come to our quilt day!

Today we worked on HST (half square triangle) quilts using 10" blocks.  We played around with different layouts. This one is my favorite.

We quilted and put binding on several quilts.  It was fun to watch our stack grow throughout the day.

Quilt Day Reminder April 12, 2014

Quilts from the Bluffs will be meeting this Saturday, April 12, at First Christian Church (Council Bluffs) from 10:00-3:00 in room C1.  If you have never been to a quilt day before, the room is on the lower level.  It is easiest to come in the NorthEast door at the back of the church.  Parking is available there, too.  Follow the signs.

This month we will begin our journey with 10" squares and some easy quilts that can be made from them.  First up will be the Easy 10-minute Block!!!  Watch the YouTube video at the link below to understand what this block is all about.  And then come Saturday and play!!  I think it will be a fun quilt to make.

If there is anything specific you need me to bring for a quilt you are working on, please let me know so I can be sure I have what you need.  Otherwise, I will only bring what we will need for the new quilts we are starting.

Quilt Retreat 2014

I know you are all anxious for our annual quilt retreat.  We will be accepting registrations starting at our next Quilt day in May.  This year's theme will the Quilt Addiction!  We should have a lot of fun with that.  The dates are September 25-28 at the Camp of the Good Shephard so mark your calendar now and be ready to turn in your registration with a minimum deposit of $25 to hold your spot.  There will be a limit of 30 for this retreat.

Charmed for Charity

Our Charmed for Charity groups that meets at Cut Up & Quilt continue to be a success.  We have lots of kits made up and we need to get these into the hands of quilters to finish.  These are great quilts to work on when you just want to do something quick and easy.  Kits will be available to pick up at quilt day or during the Charmed for Charity sessions.  You don't have to stay to quilt.  Just come by and pick up a kit or two.

Evening group meets on the 1st Thursday from 6:00 - 8:00.
Day group meets on the 3rd Wednesday from 1:00 - 3:00.

Bluffs Quiltfest 2014

I wanted to pass on this information for those who would like to participate.  If you would like more information, contact Jean Kritenbrink at

I wanted to let you know the theme so you could pass the word to your friends and sewing group as well as look at what you have that you might want to show.

The theme this year is modern, with art quilts included. As you know, the Modern genre is broad, so anything using traditional blocks in a modern way, use of brighter prints, solids, batiks, negative space used for quilting design, innovative piecing. NOreproduction prints. The quilts must be finished.

We chose a later date...Sat. Oct. 11. It will be in Community Hall like last year. We have no other details yet, except the format will be similar to last year with 2 speakers/trunk shows and several demos going on. If you know anyone that could do a presentation about an aspect of modern quilting, or a trunk show of modern designs, please let me know.

Happy quilting!

Looking forward to quilting with you this Saturday!!

Quilt Day Reminder March 2014

I hope everyone is staying warm.  What a freezing week we have had.  I am sure it will warm up by quilt day Saturday, March 8.  If not, it will be warm and friendly inside at least!  We meet at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs from 10:00 - 3:00 on the lower level room C1.  It is easier to enter through the NorthEast doors at the back of the church.

This month we will be finishing up quilts we have that are in various stages of completion. I will bring some quilts that can be easily quilted on a domestic machine.  We need to concentrate on getting more quilts totally finished to reduce our never-ending backlog of quilt tops.  I would appreciate all the help I can get from those who are comfortable quilting--either on their domestic or longarm.

If you are a longarmer and would like me to bring you some quilts, let me know.  Otherwise, i do not want to haul them to quilt day.  We have plenty that lend themselves to a longarm more than the domestic.

Quilt Deliveries
We have started out the year with a bang!  A total of 108 quilts have been delivered so far.  81 went to Project Linus, 17 to Mercy Hospital, and 10 to Children's Square.  If you would like to view some pictures of the quilts we delivered, check out our blog.

Charmed for Charity (C4C)
Our new venture, Charmed for Charity, has been a real success.  We have had two afternoon groups and one evening group so far and will meet again this Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 at Cut Up and Quilt quilt shop.  Stop by and pick up a kit, drop off a finished quilt or stay and help cut, kit and sew.

  • Afternoon group meets the 3rd Wednesday from 1:00-3:00
  • Evening group meets the 1st Thursday from 6:00-8:00

Friendship Quilt
Thank you so much for the beautiful quilt that was presented to me last quilt day.  What a wonderful surprise!  It is wonderful to know you have people in your corner that care about what you are going through.  What a great big hug I felt.  I still have five blocks I am trying to identify the owner.  If you made a block and have not let me know which block was yours, please let me know.

Thirty-One Catalog Party
Most quilters know about Thirty-One totes/bags.  I am sure whoever came up with this company was a quilter. My daughter, Christy, just started selling it this week and is looking to earn her starter kit.

Gail Brow will be hosting the catalog party.  If you would like anything, please let Gail or me know what you want.  You can check out the March specials and the catalog on line and we will have a catalog at quilt day Saturday.

Looking forward to spending the day with you on Saturday!!
