Delivery to Children's Square

Our first string quilts are being delivered this week.  We have six quilts for them--two of them string quilts.

Keep making your blocks!  I have one more top completed and enough blocks to make at least one more quilt.  Remember, we will be collecting string blocks throughout the year.  Click HERE for more information on the String Block project for Children's Square.

Last Quilt Shipment for Hurricane Sandy Relief

This has been a several month effort to make quilts for Hurricane Sandy Relief.  As we make our final shipment this week, I am hopeful that these quilts we have sent and the thousands of other quilts sent have given a little bit of hope, comfort and most importantly warmth in this crazy winter!

Thank you to everyone who has participated and a special thanks to my husband and long time supporter, Scot Williams, for taking care of shipping all these quilts!

Mercy Hospital Quilt Delivery

I dropped off 19 quilts at Mercy Hospital today.  I had to very quickly take pictures at 6:00 am this morning so I apologize for the bad pictures.  One of our lights was burned out, too, which didn't help.  Oh well, they are delivered and ready to touch someone's life in a positive way.

March 2013 Quilt Day Reminder

Did you know March 16th is National Quilting Day? I wanted to share a free pattern from the National Quilt Association in honor of the day.

Quilts from the Bluffs is meeting this Saturday, March 9, at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs, IA on the lower level.  Entering from the Northeast door in the back is the most direct route.  We meet from 10:00 – 4:00 so feel free to come and go anytime during that time period.  You don’t have to stay for the entire day. New people are always welcome so pass the invitation to your friends.

All fabric, patterns, batting and thread is supplied.  Bring your sewing machine and basic supplies.  We have mats, rulers and cutters you can use as well.

We are on our last month of making baby quilts so we hope to get them all finished.  I will also have several pillowcase kits for anyone who would like to make a very easy pillowcase to give to Children's Square.

Jelly Roll Race
Starting in April through June, our theme will be Red, White, and Blue quilts. In April, we will be making Jelly Roll Race quilts out of various 2 1/2" strips. You don't want to miss this. We plan to make the 1600" strip when we first get to quilt day and at 1:00 pm begin the timed race. You do not have to participate in the race part but, if you want to, be sure to be there on time. I will have a prize for the winner. (And I am not going to participate in the race.)

I Spy Quilts
Looking forward to July, we will be making I Spy Disappearing 9-Patch quilts. These require 4" squares with prints that can be identified such as birds, balls, dogs, stars, and other novelty items. If you have scraps in your stash that could be used for this, start cutting your 4" squares and bring them to quilt day sometime between now and July. The more variety the better. Thanks!!

Hope Net Auction
We have been asked once again to donate items for the Hope Net Auction on April 19. Hope Net is an organization that works with women transitioning out of prison and offer lots of hope, support and opportunities for these women. Quilts from the Bluffs has committed to donating two quilts. However, if there are any hand-made items you would like to contribute as well, I will be collecting items through our April quilt day.

Children's Square Twin-Size String Quilts
Quilts from the Bluffs has started a campaign to collect 6 1/2" and 12 1/2" string quilt blocks. These will be put together into 72x84 quilts for the beds at Children's Square in Council Bluffs. This has been a request of theirs for a couple years and I have not been able to accommodate the request. I think if we work together, we can get the quilts they need. You can send the blocks to my home address or drop them off at the monthly quilt days. We will continue this effort through 2013 and if it is successful, we may just keep it going long-term.

Thank you to everyone who has donated blocks so far. I love seeing the variety of blocks coming in. I will be posting pictures as we get the quilts finished.

Check out our blog for more information and directions.

Quilts of Valor
We met with the 4-H girls to complete four Quilts of Valor quilt tops on February 23. Check out the pictures from the day FaceBook.

We are gathering names of local military individuals that have been touched by war. These can be active or veterans. If you would like to submit a person as a possible recipient of one of the Quilts of Valor we are making, please send an email to qftbluffs@gmail.com with the information and your contact information. The presentation will likely be in September but we do not have an exact date yet.

Project Linus
We had 31 quilts dropped off at Cut Up and Quilt and Quilts from the Bluffs had 53 for a total of 84 quilts donated on March 2 to Project Linus. A bonus this time was that Quilts from the Bluffs won the drawing for a new sewing machine. Yeah!! View pictures of the day here.

I think that is everything I need to cover this month. I look forward to quilting with you Saturday!

Pictures from Blanket Making Day

Bryan High School cafeteria was buzzing with activity as many volunteer "blanketeers" showed up to tie fleece blankets, sew on labels, organize the fabric donation tables, and get blankets ready for various recipients.

Kathy and a friend (Amy?) first time at Project Linus.

Lots of kids ready to help out!!  Thanks!
