Quilts of Valor Quilt Day with 4H a SUCCESS

Quilts from the Bluffs partnered with the West Pott 4-H'ers on Saturday, January 26, 2013 to make four Quilts of Valor.  Eight girls attended the event along with several volunteers from the QFTB's quilt group.  It was a full day of quilting as they learned the fine art of 1/4's seams, chain-piecing, pressing and basic quilt construction.  The pride in their accomplishment was obvious and the day was very rewarding.

The group will meet one more time in February to finish the tops, including adding borders, and making a presentation case to present the quilts to the selected military individuals yet to be selected as the recipients of these quilts.

String Quilts in the Making

These are the type of quilts I would like to make for Children's Square this year.  By using both 6 1/2" squares and 12 1/2" squares, we will be able to mix and match the squares in the same quilt.  This is a good way to use up our longer strips as well as the smaller pieces and maximizing or scraps.  One more 12" row to this quilt will make it a 72x84" twin size quilt.  And not adding borders will make it easier to complete.

If you would like to participate in this project, go to String Quilts for Children's Square blog post for directions.

String Quilts for Children's Square

Quilts from the Bluffs are going to make twin-size quilts for Children's Square in Council Bluffs, IA this year.

We are asking for quilters to make some 6 1/2" or 12 1/2" string quilt blocks and send them to us.  These will be put together to make quilts to put on the beds at Children's Square.  String blocks are easy to do and are a great way to use up those little scraps you don't know what to do with anyway!  Let's pull our strings together!

Directions:

  • Cut a foundation square (use thin fabric, muslin, ugly fabric) about 1/2" bigger than the finished size you want (7" or 13").
  • Select a strip of scrap fabric (called strings) and lay across the foundation diagonally, right side up.  Make sure the string completely covers the foundation square.
  • Select a second string and lay right side down on the previous strip.  Sew a 1/4" seam through these layers.  Flip the second strip over and press the seam.
  • Select another string and lay it right side down on the previous strip and sew seam, flip, and press.
  • Continue this process until the entire foundation square is covered.  With a square ruler (if you have one), square up the block to the finished size (6 1/2" or 12 1/2").

This will be an on-going effort throughout the year.  If it is successful, we will continue it beyond 2013.

You can send your finished squares to:

January 2013 Statistics

I like to take a snapshot of where we are in our quilt creation and delivery process every month.  These numbers change quickly but it gives us a glimpse into our progress and gives us a chance to celebrate our successes along the way.

So, as of January 12, we have delivered 1 quilt, have 21 finished quilts on hand and ready to deliver, and we have 73 quilt tops that need to be quilted.  Not a bad start to the new year.

We also set a record at our January 12 quilt day...we had 29 quilters attend including 4 new quilters.  Our highest attendance in 2012 was 24.

It was so fun to just watch all the activity and conversation.  I'm sure we could be heard all over the church!  But we were very busy little quilting bees!

Check out our FaceBook link (see the Links tab) for pictures from January's quilt day.

Next quilt day will be February 9.  If you would like information about Quilts from the Bluffs, please contact Jeanine at qftbluffs@gmail.com.

January, 2013, Quilt Day Reminder

Let’s get this New Year off to a great start!  Quilts from the Bluffs is meeting this Saturday, January 12, at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs, IA on the lower level.  Entering from the Northeast door in the back is the most direct route.  We meet from 10:00 – 4:00 so feel free to come and go anytime during that time period.  You don’t have to stay for the entire day.

All fabric, patterns, batting and thread is supplied.  Bring your sewing machine and basic supplies.  We have mats, rulers and cutters you can use as well.

We work on the same quilt pattern or theme for three months at a time.  For January – March, we will be making baby quilts (most of them flannel).  Each kit will have everything in it to complete the quilt (fabric for top, backing, batting, binding and pattern).  I would like to have the quilts finished, if possible, before being returned as they are easy to quilt on a small machine.  If you need help to learn how to do the quilting or the binding, please ask.  You could work in teams if you don’t like to finish quilts.  Once could make the top and the other quilt/bind it.

Quilts of Valor
We are starting a Quilts of Valor group with some Iowa 4H youth on January 26.  We need volunteers to work with the youth to make a quilt.  Everyone will be working on the same pattern--a Split Rail Fence-- and all materials will be supplied.  The adult will do the cutting and supervising the sewing/pressing.  I would like to have enough adults available to pair with one or two youth.  Please let me know if you can commit to this.  We are expecting 8-20 youth to participate in this group and we will probably meet once a month for three months.
