Quilt Day June 2013

It is always fun to meet together to quilt.  This month, there was lots of activity.

We are finishing up some Rail Fence Quilts of Valor quilts to be presented to veterans in a ceremony in September.  Four were made by the 4H girls (see previous posts) and the rest will come from the Quilts from the Bluffs quilters.

Some were making string blocks with leftover strips.

We were glad to see quilters that have been away a few months...

We shared our finished group quilts...

And shared in some personal show n tell...

We accept all sizes of help on our quilts...Thanks, Luke!

Here's to next month.  You don't want to miss I Spy quilts!!!

Quilt Day Reminder - Saturday, June 8, 2013

It's almost quilt day again!!  We will meet Saturday, June 8, at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs on the lower level.  Entering from the Northeast door in the back is the most direct route.

We will be meeting until 3:00 instead of 4:00 for the warmer months. We understand there are a lot of things pulling on our attention especially when the weather is nicer and we want to respect that. We will move back to 4:00 in October.
All fabric, patterns, batting and thread is supplied.  Bring your sewing machine and basic supplies.  We have mats, rulers and cutters you can use as well.   Grab a friend and come quilt with us!

Red, White & Blue
This is our last month of our theme is Red, White and Blue. We had a lot of fun with the Jelly Roll Race quilt in April and Split Rail Fence quilts in May. This month we will be finishing the rail fence quilts if you need to or you can start a new quilt using up some of the "leftovers" of our patriotic fabric in a four-patch quilt or make string blocks for a string quilt.

I Spy Quilts
Looking forward to July, we will be making I Spy Disappearing 9-Patch quilts. These require 4" squares with prints that can be identified such as birds, balls, dogs, stars, and other novelty items. If you have scraps in your stash that could be used for this, start cutting your 4" squares and bring them to quilt day sometime between now and July. The more variety the better. Thanks!!

Quilt Retreat
This year's quilt retreat theme is "Wanda Wonky and the Quilt Factory". We plan to have some fun with that! Dates for the retreat is September 26-29 and will be held at The Camp of the Good Shepherd in Louisville, NE. This will be our 6th retreat and I know many are looking forward to it. I am attaching the registration form for this year's quilt retreat. You can begin turning in your forms with at least $25 to hold your spot. Full payment will need to be made by the first of August. If you have any questions about the retreat, send me an email or talk with me at quilt day. It is always a LOT of fun!

Quilts of Valor/4H Project
We met Saturday, June 1, to add labels to the four quilts made by the 4H group. It is so fun to see these girls work so hard on this and be so excited at their accomplishment.

Thank you to those in Quilts from the Bluffs who volunteered their time to mentor these girls, quilt the quilts, or add the binding. This was definitely a group effort.

Check out the pictures on our blog and facebook page.
Iowa Shop Hop
The Iowa Shop Hop is going on now through June 20. Make sure you stop in at our local quilt shop...Cut Up and Quilt.

Children's Square Twin-Size String Quilts
Quilts from the Bluffs has started a campaign to collect 6 1/2" and 12 1/2" string quilt blocks. These will be put together into 72x84 quilts for the beds at Children's Square in Council Bluffs. This has been a request of theirs for a couple years and I have not been able to accommodate the request. I think if we work together, we can get the quilts they need. You can send the blocks to my home address or drop them off at the monthly quilt days. We will continue this effort through 2013 and if it is successful, we may just keep it going long-term.

Thank you to everyone who has donated blocks so far. I love seeing the variety of blocks coming in. I will be posting pictures as we get the quilts finished. I think we have made five so far.

Check out our blog for more information and directions.

You can mail your blocks to my house (address below), drop them off at one of our monthly quilt days, or drop them off in the Project Linus trunk at Cut Up and Quilt quilt shop in Council Bluffs.

My address:
3118 Gold Rush Road

Looking forward to quilting with you on Saturday!

4H Quilts of Valor Project - Quilts are Done

Yesterday the 4H girls and the Quilts from the Bluffs volunteers met to put the finishing touch on the four quilts we have been working on...the LABEL.

Quilt labels tell a story about a quilt and the story we are trying to tell is one of appreciation for the service the recipients of the quilts have given.

One of the labels.
We had nine girls work on making four quilt tops.  These tops were then sent to volunteer longarm quilters to  do the quilting and then the quilt binding was attached around the edge to finish it off.

One of the quilts on the Longarm quilting machine frame.
Here are the four finished quilts with their proud "toppers" (as the quilt top makers are called in Quilts of Valor.)
