April Quilt Day Reminder - Quilts from the Bluffs

Quilts from the Bluffs is meeting this Saturday, April 13, at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs, IA on the lower level.  Entering from the Northeast door in the back is the most direct route.  We meet from 10:00 – 4:00 so feel free to come and go anytime during that time period.  You don’t have to stay for the entire day. New people are always welcome so pass the invitation to your friends.

All fabric, patterns, batting and thread is supplied.  Bring your sewing machine and basic supplies.  We have mats, rulers and cutters you can use as well.

This month we are starting our second quarter theme of Red, White and Blue quilts. We are going to kick off the theme with a little competition. For those that would like to participate, we will be having a timed Jelly Roll Race. The race will start at 1:00 pm and there is about an hour of preparation before you can begin...sewing the equivilent of 40 2 1/2" strips (a jelly roll) into a continuous 1600" 2 1/2" try to be there by 11:00am. Come for the FUN!!

Even if you don't want to participate in the timed race, it is still a lot of fun to make a jelly roll race quilt. I hope you will come for the fun!!

We gave 19 quilts to Mercy Hospital in March. They have been so appreciative of the quilts we give. I also received a thank you note from the husband of someone who received a quilt while in hospice. These quilts do make a difference.

Kathy Donovan is working with her coworkers to use old scrub hats that are no longer being used to make fun string quilts. These will be given to the transplant unit at her hospital. Quilts from the Bluffs is supporting this effort with some quilting help and materials as needed. Three of these quilts were finished this month.

We have also delivered six twin-size quilts to Children's Square along with 10 flannel pillowcases.

Total quilts delivered YTD are 120!!! Not bad for the first quarter. THANK YOU!!!

I Spy Quilts
Looking forward to July, we will be making I Spy Disappearing 9-Patch quilts. These require 4" squares with prints that can be identified such as birds, balls, dogs, stars, and other novelty items. If you have scraps in your stash that could be used for this, start cutting your 4" squares and bring them to quilt day sometime between now and July. The more variety the better. Thanks!!

Hope Net Auction
We have been asked once again to donate items for the Hope Net Auction on April 19. Hope Net is an organization that works with women transitioning out of prison and offer lots of hope, support and opportunities for these women. Quilts from the Bluffs has committed to donating two quilts. However, if there are any hand-made items you would like to contribute as well, I will be collecting items through our April quilt day.
Quilt Retreat
This year's quilt retreat theme is "Wanda Wonky and the Quilt Factory". We plan to have some fun with that! Dates for the retreat is September 26-29 and will be held at The Camp of the Good Shepherd in Louisville, NE. This will be our 6th retreat and I know many are looking forward to it. I am attaching the registration form for this year's quilt retreat. You can begin turning in your forms with at least $25 to hold your spot. Full payment will need to be made by the first of August. If you have any questions about the retreat, send me an email or talk with me at quilt day. It is always a LOT of fun!

Children's Square Twin-Size String Quilts
Quilts from the Bluffs has started a campaign to collect 6 1/2" and 12 1/2" string quilt blocks. These will be put together into 72x84 quilts for the beds at Children's Square in Council Bluffs. This has been a request of theirs for a couple years and I have not been able to accommodate the request. I think if we work together, we can get the quilts they need. You can send the blocks to my home address or drop them off at the monthly quilt days. We will continue this effort through 2013 and if it is successful, we may just keep it going long-term.

Thank you to everyone who has donated blocks so far. I love seeing the variety of blocks coming in. I will be posting pictures as we get the quilts finished.

Check out our blog for more information and directions.

My address:
3118 Gold Rush Road

Get your racing shoes on and we will see you Saturday!!
