February 2013 Quilt Day Reminder

The groundhog didn't see his shadow so I guess we are in for an early Spring! But before Spring arrives, it is always warm and cozy at quilt day, even in February. We had our highest turnout yet in January with 30 quilters participating and I would love to top that again this month.

Quilts from the Bluffs is meeting this Saturday, February 9, at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs, IA on the lower level.  Entering from the Northeast door in the back is the most direct route.  We meet from 10:00 – 4:00 so feel free to come and go anytime during that time period.  You don’t have to stay for the entire day.

All fabric, patterns, batting and thread is supplied.  Bring your sewing machine and basic supplies.  We have mats, rulers and cutters you can use as well.

We work on the same quilt pattern or theme for three months at a time.  We are on our second month of making baby quilts (most of them flannel).  Each kit will have everything in it to complete the quilt (fabric for top, backing, batting, binding and pattern).  We made great progress last month! Several were already working on the quilting of the quilts by the end of the day.

Children's Square Twin-Size String Quilts
Quilts from the Bluffs has started a campaign to collect 6 1/2" and 12 1/2" string quilt blocks. These will be put together into 72x84 quilts for the beds at Children's Square in Council Bluffs. This has been a request of theirs for a couple years and I have not been able to accommodate the request. I think if we work together, we can get the quilts they need. You can send the blocks to my home address or drop them off at the monthly quilt days. We will continue this effort through 2013 and if it is successful, we may just keep it going long-term.

Check out our blog for more information and directions.

Quilts of Valor
We had a lot of fun making quilts with eight 4H girls on January 26. If you have not seen the photos from the event, check out our FaceBook page and Blog. We will meet again on February 23 to complete the tops and make a pillowcase to present the finished quilts in.

We are gathering names of local military individuals that have been touched by war. These can be active or veterans. If you would like to submit a person as a possible recipient of one of the Quilts of Valor we are making, please send an email to with the information and your contact information. The presentation will be sometime in late summer.

Project Linus
March 2, the Omaha Project Linus will hold a blanket making day from 9:00 - 1:00 at Bryan High School in Bellevue. If you would like more information, let me know.

Also, Cut Up and Quilt quilt shop is now our Council Bluffs drop off site for Project Linus blankets/quilts.  Please help us get this information out to those who have an interest in making blankets for them.  We are also working with the quilt shop to possibly have quilt kits available to you from the quilt shop.  I will give you more information as we work out the details.

Quilt Retreat 2013
Several are already getting excited for our annual quilt retreat. We will officially have registration forms in May but mark the dates on the calendar for September 27-30 at Camp of the Good Shepherd. Cost is the same as last year, $80 for three days and $100 for four. There is an extra charge for private/semi-private rooms and these are limited.

If it would be easier for you to pay for the retreat by making small payments over time, you can turn in money anytime between now and August and I will deposit it in our Quilt Ministry account and track it for you. Let me know if you would like to take advantage of this option.

Group T-Shirts/Hoodies
I am taking orders for our Quilts from the Bluffs t-shirts and hoodies.  I am waiting form two more orders before I can order so let me know if you would like one. If you are interested, let me know the style, color and size.  Money is needed at the time of order and I need at least six shirts before I can place an order so I am keeping a list of requests until I have enough.

Checks should be made out to FCC with a note in the memo section “Quilt Ministry”.
  • Short-Sleeve T-Shirt- $15
  • Long-Sleeve T-Shirt - $25
  • Hoodie - $32

I have been asked a couple times this month if we accept donations of fabric.  The answer is YES.  We especially love hand-me-downs from quilters who understand what fabric makes great quilts.  We make a lot of scrap quilts so if you would like to clean out some of your scraps that are taking over your quilt room, we would happily take them.  Batting is also always needed.

Someone else asked me if we accepted quilt tops that were not finished.  Absolutely!  I understand how fun it is to make tops but sometimes that's as far as they get.  I am sure we could find a loving home for your handiwork.  These can be dropped of at Cut Up and Quilt or at our monthly quilt days.

I so appreciate everyone's participation and support of Quilts from the Bluffs.  We are a unique quilt group that is making a big difference in the local community.  Anticipating a great day on Saturday.  See you there!!!
